Community First Foundation Connects DAF Holders with Colorado Nonprofits

Community foundations play an active role in identifying needs, communicating those needs, and organizing and rallying Donor-Advised Fund (DAF) holders. Community First Foundation does just that to support its network of more than 2,900 nonprofits on ColoradoGives.org, which in turn support Colorado and Jeffco residents in need.

Think you’re ready to open a DAF? You can initiate a DAF at Community First Foundation with an initial contribution of just $5,000. The contribution can be in the form of cash, publicly traded securities, or more complex assets. You also receive a tax benefit every time you contribute. Learn more about joining the DAF revolution with Community First Foundation.

Community First Foundation is working to make giving even easier for DAF holders both within and outside of Community First Foundation.

All-New Giving Card Program for DAF Holders
In 2020, Community First Foundation introduced a Giving Card program, which offers DAF holders from other community foundations, or Fidelity and Schwab, to participate in statewide online giving on Colorado Gives Day. These Giving Cards allow those who hold DAFs both with Community First Foundation or with an outside sponsoring organization to select nonprofits using ColoradoGives.org.

Community First Foundation DAF Holders Can Request a Giving Card
DAF holders with Community First Foundation must first log into your donor account on to iCommunity. From your account, you can make grant recommendation directly to Community First Foundation in exchange for a Giving Card. When you receive your Giving Card you then go to ColoradoGives.org where you can make donations as little as $5 to your favorite nonprofits.

Non-Community First Foundation DAF Holders Can Request a Giving Card
People who have a donor-advised fund with another sponsoring organization outside of Community First Foundation can start by recommending a grant to Community First Foundation. In that recommendation, you should include a request for a ColoradoGives DAF Giving Card. Once your sponsoring organization issues the grant and Community First Foundation receives the funds, a Giving Card is issued to you.

How to Use My DAF Giving Card
You can use your Giving Cards at any time. In 2020, 23 Community First Foundation DAF Giving Cards were used to make 223 donations to 161 nonprofits for a total of $166,978.45. The median Community First Foundation DAF Giving Card donation was $500 and the most frequent donation was $250.

Eight outside DAF Giving Cards were used to make 83 donations to 76 nonprofits for a total of $26,324.88. The median outside DAF Giving Card donation was $100 and the most frequent donation was $50.

In 2020, 100% of the Community First Foundation DAF Giving Cards and 75% of outside DAF Giving Cards were used on Colorado Gives Day. Community First Foundation is already thinking of ways to expand the program in 2021 by amplifying the amount of money that goes to support our local nonprofit community.
